RXR chest proctectors with ASA (Air Shock Absorption) are designed to work similar to the shock absorber in your car. They absorb the bulk of the shock from an impact. This is done by a series of air chambers that allow air to move from chamber to chamber through restricted passageways absorbing the energy from an impact before it can reach your body.
Testing:
The comparative tests (performed by the CRITT laboratory ( www.critt-sl.com) were performed on 3 different types of chest-protectors:

For the tests, the products were placed on a table equipped with various sensors measuring the shock absorption and resistance capacities of the products. A strength/power of 12 KJ was applied, from different heights/angles, to the products and the results show that the A.S.A. system has 5 times more energy absorption/resistance than hard-plastic chest-protectors and 10 times higher than foam-based products. Absorption time and distribution of the impact on the whole area of the product is clearly higher.
